What a great idea.
Basil is one of the most valuable plants in the garden, and is a perfect flavoring with tomatoes.
They are easy to look after and they contribute much to many different types of dishes in the kitchen. The are many types of basil. Most common are Sweet or Italian Basil. Sweet Basil is the basis of many Italian dishes including popular pesto sauce. Combined it with garlic and ripe tomatoes and you got remarkable dish that your friend will be envy of

Basil plants can be grown in containers or in the ground. Best spot is in semi shaded place of the garden (possible with tomatoes)

Basil is an annual and is usually grown from seed. But I like to transplant it into pots where is growing to full size.
Male sure that you use basil on regular basis other vise will go into seeds (which is also good you can use seeds next year).

Sowing or transplanting
Fill pot with soil (possible good quality), place 3-5 seeds on top of the soil, cover it up with thin layer of soil.
Bingo you got your self great herb in your own garden or veranda.
Water it from time to time with rain water if possible. Best additive for basil is compost juice or even better worm juice.

Basil has tender leaves and is sensitive to frost. At the end of autumn place it in protected area and water it less than in summer (common sense).
